Lmao at REMs early work being rough and rugged. Their 80s output is among their very best

I do have to respectfully disagree on the point about never putting out ‘duds’, if a ‘dud’ is how I’m interpreting it here. I feel like the myth of having perfect music is overrated; there are plenty of artists (R.E.M. comes to mind) whose early work is as rough and ragged as anything. I think many people enjoy listening to music that isn’t polished to a shine; it sounds relatable and it sounds real. After ‘the big song’ (ie. “Losing My Religion’), those songs often seem to serve as deep cuts that further connect fans to the artist.

The pressure on musicians today to make everything sound perfect and ‘radio-ready’ is, in my opinion, unnecessary and potentially harmful.

The best tip for me was actually the one about creating that one song that is awesome to almost everybody. If one doesn’t have that.. one doesn’t have much I’m afraid. Thank you.

1) How to get the live fans to come in at the beginning of a show and stay around after their favorite band is done and

2) Alternate means of promotion for start up bands whose members are 40 and over.

I would like to elaborate a bit on those two points. As to fans who only stick around for “their” band, I book my band locally with two others for each show. I constantly see people come into the gig late if their favorite band is on in the second or third spot and then leave right away after that band is done. Even most of our fans do this. I’m talking about bar gigs mainly but I see it on the larger level.

I remember one time when my wife and I went to see The Cure with The Twilight Sad as the opener in a 10,000 set venue which was pretty much sold out. Probably only around 2,000 people watched TTS’s set. The band was great by the way. The rest were milling around in the corridors or hadn’t shown up yet.

On the second point, it’s a different game when you are starting a new band at age 40 or 50 compared to being in your twenties. Getting fans is a lot harder because they have kids and are reluctant to stay up past 10 p.m. even on a Friday or Saturday. Any ideas there?

My brother just released his first EP, and he is looking to promote it outside of playing at the local music venue. I’ll suggest he find an agency that can help him with creating newsletters and other sources to get the word out on his music.

It’s always nice to get out of the usual “post on facebook/twitter” stuff. I do have one question though. I find it really difficult to create an artist name for myself. I’ve changed it few times now and every time I find myself being unsatisfied with it. Do you have any articles related to choosing artist name ? My main problem is that my real name is pretty rare and outlandish so I can’t use it.

Musicians need to start looking at themselves as a business and respect the kind of work that goes into making a business successful. Look at Mcdonalds for example. Arguably one of the best known brands in the world, yet they still constantly advertise on TV, radio, magazines, etc. This should give you an idea of how much work you, as an unknown musician, have to put into marketing. Not just any work of course though, smart and consisitent work. It’s a marathon not a sprint.

Anyway I must be the most unlucky guy from the world cause I’ve been doing this everyday of this year and I spent lots of money with gear and I didn’t earn even a cent. My friends say that my records are amazing and that I just play the guitar like Eric Clapton but nobody wants to give me a pound. I think the music is just for those who have big marketing companies supporting them. I’m completly tired of this and I’m almost sure I’ll be delivering pizza forever.

After reading your first tip that suggests connecting with businesses I thought I would take your advice. Before I do, I thought you should know that i’m seriously going to apply as much as I can from this article to real life. It was informative, easy to understand, and it has seriously helped me a bunch as i’m just starting to promote my music. Anyways, I was wondering if you have any specific strategies for tips getting articles/blogs to post links/reviews/mentions of my music on their sites? Here is my music sound cloud.com/ridleyjack … I would greatly appreciate some of your advice and good work with the article. Thanks!

Hi Jonathan. You’re right, shares won’t be interesting to them. You can however benefit them if your name has a buzz and you can share some of that buzz with their event. While you won’t be able to get in this position initially, using the compounding effect you should be able to get to that stage and get some attention around yourself. From there you’ll make it more and more desirable for others to work with you, meaning they’ll get benefit and some of the attention you’re getting.

It’s all about building your way up the ladder, making yourself more valuable at each stage.

Hi Mark, glad the article connected with you. Promoting your music isn’t always a fast race to the top, there are steps which need to be taken, and it’s a gradual building process. That said, connecting with those who have a bigger audience can be a short cut many don’t take advantage of.

I hope you’re release went well and you took advantage of some of these promotion strategies.
